The commission issued a notice citing Section 27 of the Representation of the People Act (Cap. 379), which forbids the sale, offering for sale, or giving away of intoxicating liquor at any premises in a constituency where an election is being held during the hours the polls are open.

The restriction applies to establishments operating under licences issued through the Licensing (Intoxicating Liquor) Act.

Under the law, any person who breaches the provision commits an offence and may face a summary conviction penalty of up to $3,000 or 12 months’ imprisonment.

The reminder comes as preparations continue for the St. Philip’s North by-election, with voters scheduled to return to the polls on March 16 to elect a new parliamentary representative for the constituency.
