ST. JOHN’S, Antigua — The Antigua and Barbuda Search and Rescue service has announced the death of longtime volunteer Lee J. Sagert, who suffered a major medical event while responding to an emergency call.

In a statement shared by the organization, ABSAR said Sagert had been a volunteer with the search and rescue community in Antigua and Barbuda for more than a decade, serving residents and visitors through numerous rescue operations.

Sagert worked in several emergency response roles, including as a firefighter, paramedic and rescue technician.

According to ABSAR director Jonathan Cornelius, Sagert remained deeply committed to the work of emergency services throughout his time on the island.

“Lee J. Sagert — firefighter, paramedic, rescue technician, colleague, mentor, friend,” Cornelius said in a tribute shared by the organization.

Cornelius recalled meeting Sagert when he first arrived in Antigua and said he quickly became known for his eagerness to serve and his passion for rescue work.

Sagert volunteered with ABSAR for many years and later worked out of the Barbuda Ocean Club, where he handled fire, emergency medical services and rescue calls.

Cornelius said Sagert suffered a major medical event while responding to one such call. Care was immediately provided by a team member, but he did not respond to treatment.

“Lee died doing what he loved to do, what he devoted his life to doing,” Cornelius said.

ABSAR extended condolences to Sagert’s family and friends, describing him as a valued member of the search and rescue community whose contributions supported emergency response efforts across Antigua and Barbuda.
