Taxi operators at Antigua and Barbuda’s main airport are preparing to modernize their services, with government backing for new digital platforms and stricter rules aimed at curbing illegal competition.

At this week’s post-Cabinet briefing, officials said the United Taxi Company (UTC) has agreed to adopt online booking systems and mobile apps to meet the expectations of international travellers. The move comes as part of a wider government effort to support technology-driven upgrades, including the use of more SUVs and modern vehicles in the fleet.

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said operators have accepted that technology is “fast taking over” and that visitors increasingly prefer to book transport before arrival. “They want better ease of travel and they do not want the hassle of waiting at the airport,” he told reporters, adding that the Ministry of Information and Technology would provide support in developing or adapting digital platforms.

The modernization drive follows months of concern over “fly-by-night” operators —unlicensed drivers accused of unlawfully soliciting passengers and undermining legitimate services at VC Bird International Airport. To counter this, Cabinet has approved measures including a dispatcher system, police presence to deter illegal solicitation, and a new sticker and registration regime for destination management companies.

Officials stressed that the reforms were agreed upon by taxi associations, the airport authority, and other stakeholders, although implementation will take time.

The changes mark a significant shift in the country’s ground transportation sector, aiming to blend technological convenience with tighter regulation to protect both operators and visitors.
