Several people have been convicted as the District C court convened in Barbuda this week.
During court proceedings presided over by acting Chief Magistrate Dexter Wason on Monday, four people were convicted for varying offences including possession of cannabis, and traffic infractions.
After pleading guilty to two charges — possession of 39 grams of cannabis and possession with intent to transfer — Malik Payne, 24, was convicted, reprimanded and discharged on the possession charge. He was fined $1,000 on the count of possession with intent to transfer. Payne was given 30 days to pay the sum, or he faces 90 days in prison.
Another 24-year-old, Dilon Thomas, who pleaded guilty to possession of 172 grams of cannabis and possession with intent to transfer the illegal substance, also received a reprimand and was discharged on the charge of possession. However, Magistrate Wason imposed a $10,000 fine on the possession with intent to transfer charge.
Thomas has 90 days to pay his fine or he will be jailed for 90 days.
Azad Nurdeen, an Antiguan who resides in Barbuda, appeared in court on a charge of possession of 72 grams of cannabis.
He was found guilty of committing the offence and was fined $1,500 payable in 30 days or in default 90 days at His Majesty’s Prison.
David Hendrickson of Barbuda also appeared in the District C Magistrate’s Court facing six charges: driving an unlicensed vehicle, driving an uninsured vehicle, keeping for use an unlicensed and uninsured vehicle, fraudulent use of a license disc, failure to comply with a lawful direction and making use of threatening language. He pleaded guilty to all the charges and was fined $1,000 for driving an uninsured vehicle. On the charge of fraudulent use of license disc, he was fined $500. All fines are payable in 30 days, or in default Hendrickson will spend 30 days in prison.
Meanwhile, Sashalita Jones and Jodiann Mcnairn of Barbuda who faced two charges: disorderly conduct and wounding walked free after the case was dismissed for want of prosecution.
