The _government of[ **Antigua and Barbuda**](https://antiguanewsroom.com/2025-is-a-year-of-visionary-development-and-empowerment-for-antigua-and-barbuda-winston-williams-jr/?swcfpc=1)_ is moving to strengthen its litter enforcement efforts, with plans to _deploy more litter wardens_ and explore the use of _CCTV cameras_ to monitor illegal dumping.

Speaking at the Post-Cabinet Press Briefing, _Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst_ acknowledged that while litter wardens are already in place, their effectiveness has been questioned.

“At present, we have about _half a dozen_ wardens, but the Minister has indicated that they may not have the vigor required to properly patrol and enforce the laws,” he said.

Authorities see an _expanded warden program_ as key to keeping the country clean, particularly given the importance of _tourism to the local economy_. “Aclean**[Antigua and Barbuda](https://antiguanewsroom.com/antigua-and-barbuda-to-host-6th-annual-heart-stroke-symposium/?swcfpc=1)** is necessary if we are to attract repeat visitors, and maintaining a pristine environment benefits both residents and tourists,” Hurst added.

To strengthen enforcement, officials are also _considering CCTV cameras_ in _high-dumping areas_ to provide 24-hour surveillance. “It would be a combination of both [wardens and cameras]. The cameras would provide evidence, while wardens would be responsible for issuing tickets and taking enforcement action,” Hurst explained.

The government has not disclosed a _timeline for the expansion_ but maintains that tackling _illegal dumping and littering_ is a priority.

Officials are urging the public to _take personal responsibility_ for waste disposal, warning that increased surveillance could lead to _fines and penalties_ for offenders.
