The Barbudan community planted 250 mangrove seedlings at Codrington Lagoon on Sunday February 16th 2025 guided by research conducted by marine ecologist Ruleo Camacho, to enhance coastal resilience.

Supported by the WAITT Foundation and GEF Small Grants Programme, this grassroots initiative involved local fishermen and students in revitalizing the mangrove ecosystem, which aids in erosion prevention, marine life support, and carbon absorption.

The project engaged volunteers in citizen science for habitat monitoring and environmental awareness, highlighting the effectiveness of community-led conservation efforts in promoting Barbuda’s resilience and sustainable ocean use.

Through workshops and educational programs, participants learned about the critical role mangroves play in protecting shorelines and maintaining biodiversity.

The initiative also fostered a deeper connection between the community and their natural environment, encouraging stewardship and sustainable practices for future generations.

As the seedlings take root and grow, they symbolize hope and resilience, demonstrating how collective action can lead to meaningful change.

The success of this project serves as an inspiring model for other coastal communities facing similar environmental challenges, proving that local knowledge and cooperation are powerful tools in the fight against climate change.
