Two men were disqualified from driving for different periods after appearing before the court for breaching the country’s traffic laws.

Samuel Stevens, 24, of Cooks Extension, who pleaded guilty to driving without a licence and insurance, was caught during a police stop and search exercise on Valley Road in the vicinity of Sign Pro about 2 pm on January 2.

He was driving a silver rental motorcar going from north to south when officers signalled for him to stop.

The lawmen approached him after he complied and asked him for his driver’s licence, and he admitted he did not have one. He was told that he had committed an offence and was taken into police custody pending further investigations.

During their additional probe, the police found out that 29-year-old Ali Gordon had given Stevens his vehicle to drive.

Gordon, who pleaded guilty to permitting Stevens to drive his car, explained to the court that they both went out the previous night and because he was feeling sick, he went home and told him to drop the car by a relative.

He said he was surprised the following day when the police telephoned him and told him to come to the station.

Magistrate Dexter Wason told Gordon, a mobile car wash attendant and the father of two, that he was disqualified from driving for the next 14 days. Additionally, he was fined $2,500 which should be paid in 30 days or he will be jailed for 30 days.

On the other hand, Stevens, who has a driver’s permit, was convicted and fined $1,000 for driving without insurance which he has 30 days to pay or face imprisonment for 30 days.

For driving without a licence he was disqualified from driving for three months.
