The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Cuba as the island continues to face economic and humanitarian challenges, while pledging to play its part in regional assistance efforts being coordinated through CARICOM.

The issue arose during Thursday’s post-Cabinet media briefing when Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant was asked about ongoing regional support for Cuba and whether Antigua and Barbuda had contributed to CARICOM’s humanitarian initiative.

Merchant said the matter was not discussed during Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting but noted that Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene is currently attending regional meetings where issues concerning Cuba remain on the agenda.

He stressed that Antigua and Barbuda remains committed to assisting Cuba and stands ready to fulfill its obligations under regional support initiatives.

“Antigua and Barbuda stands ready to fulfill its commitment to supporting the humanitarian effort towards Cuba,” Merchant said.

Merchant described Cuba as a longstanding friend of Antigua and Barbuda and said the government remains prepared to provide assistance where possible.

He also noted that Antigua and Barbuda has consistently used international forums to advocate on Cuba’s behalf, particularly regarding relations between Cuba and the United States. According to Merchant, the country will continue to support efforts aimed at improving conditions for the Cuban people.

“Anything to lessen the burden of the people of the Republic of Cuba, Antigua and Barbuda stands ready to give support,” he said.

CARICOM leaders have repeatedly expressed concern about the economic hardships facing Cuba and have explored ways to provide practical assistance through regional cooperation and humanitarian support initiatives.

Antigua and Barbuda has historically maintained close diplomatic relations with Cuba, particularly in the areas of healthcare, education and technical cooperation, and government officials say that partnership remains an important aspect of the country’s foreign policy.
