A former senior executive at State Insurance Company Limited has been awarded nearly EC$887,000 after the Industrial Court ruled his dismissal was unfair and procedurally flawed.

The court found the company wrongfully terminated former Chief Financial Officer Andre Knight in November 2023 after more than two decades of service, rejecting claims that he was responsible for financial mismanagement and regulatory failures.

In its ruling, the court said State Insurance failed to identify any specific wrongdoing by Knight tied to a disputed EC$9.8 million accounting discrepancy, which evidence showed originated in another department outside his control.

The panel also criticized the company’s handling of the dismissal, finding Knight was not formally charged, warned, or given adequate time to prepare a response before being terminated.

The court awarded compensation totaling EC$886,909.90, including EC$50,000 in exemplary damages after concluding the dismissal was carried out in a harsh and oppressive manner.

Judges also pointed to the company’s failure to offer Knight the option to convert his medical insurance shortly before his daughter was scheduled for surgery overseas. The court said the omission appeared deliberate rather than accidental.

The compensation package includes damages for loss of protection, immediate and future losses, legal costs, and additional medical-related compensation subject to proof of expenses. Payments are scheduled in three monthly instalments ending July 31, 2026.
