Motorists across Antigua and Barbuda formed long queues at petrol stations on Sunday as preparations intensified for a large island-wide motorcade ahead of the April 30 general election.

From early morning, drivers lined up at service stations along major roads, with some reporting waits of more than an hour as they refuelled for the planned “megacade”.

The surge in demand caused congestion in several communities, particularly around busy commercial areas, as vehicles queued to access pumps. Some stations also reported temporary shortages of certain fuel grades, adding to delays.

The motorcade, being organised by the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), is expected to pass through multiple constituencies and attract large numbers of supporters travelling in cars, buses and trucks.

Some motorists said the rush was driven by participation in the event, while others said they were concerned about possible fuel shortages later in the day.

Fuel station staff worked to manage the increased demand, with traffic control measures introduced at some locations to maintain order and safety.
