An Antiguan and Barbudan teacher with more than 30 years’ experience in special education has been named among five finalists for the 2026 South Carolina Teacher of the Year award.

Ms Wharton, who teaches at Berkeley High School, was surprised with the news by state and district officials at her school on 17 March. Her husband and son were present.

Originally from Antigua and Barbuda, she has built a career focused on inclusive, student-centred learning for children with disabilities. She works with students from grades nine to 12, developing individualised education plans and supporting both academic progress and personal growth.

She holds qualifications from the University of the West Indies, Florida Memorial University and Grand Canyon University.

As a finalist, Ms Wharton will receive $10,000 and proceed to the final stage of the competition, which includes an interview. The winner, to be announced in April, will receive $25,000, a car for a year and serve as an ambassador for educators across South Carolina.
