The Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU) successfully hosted its Young Workers Seminar last week, delivering two days of dynamic learning and empowerment for the next generation of workers.
In opening the Seminar, General Secretary David Massiah underscored the importance of solidarity among young workers. He reminded participants that many of the rights and protections they benefit from today were secured through the struggles of those who came before them.
Massiah called on young workers to become more invested in improving conditions at their respective workplaces to ensure future generations continue to benefit from the collective gains of the trade union movement.
The seminar featured a series of impactful presentations designed to strengthen both personal and professional development.
Among the highlights was a presentation by Joy-Ann Harrigan, who led an engaging session on Emotional Intelligence, guiding participants through interactive group exercises that challenged them to reflect deeply and apply practical strategies for managing emotions in the workplace.
Career advancement also came into focus with an enlightening presentation by Academic Coach, Ashanti O’Keefe, who encouraged participants to intentionally pursue career paths aligned with their personal goals and values.
Author and motivational speaker, Octavia Nicholas delivered an inspiring presentation titled “Blooming Where You Are”. She urged young workers to value their current opportunities, give their best and develop skills that will prepare them for their desired career paths.
Participants were also engaged in sessions on effective communication and mapping strategies for developing life skills that will contribute to their personal and professional growth.
The young workers also benefited from a critical presentation on Fundamental Rights and Union Principles, which deepened participants’ understanding of worker protections.
Attendees expressed deep gratitude to the union for hosting the event. “I would like to say thank you to the ABWU for putting on this workshop for us, the young workers. It was a really good workshop.”
Another participant described the two days as “educational and informative,” adding that the knowledge gained would help them operate more confidently and collaborate effectively with coworkers.
Beyond the learning sessions, the seminar also provided valuable networking opportunities, allowing young workers to connect, share experiences, and strengthen bonds of solidarity.
