Former senator and community activist Malika Parker says the United Progressive Party (UPP) has reached a point of maturity that makes it ready for growth and renewal, despite a history of internal divisions that once drove her from frontline politics.

Speaking during a Twin Island Media Live interview on Saturday, Parker said her decision to rejoin the UPP followed extensive reflection and discussions with party leaders about lessons learned from past leadership contests and internal conflicts.

Parker, who left the party in 2016 following a bruising leadership race, said she was not prepared to return until she was satisfied that the party had addressed issues of inclusiveness, culture, and internal repair.

She said those conversations did take place and convinced her that both she and the party had evolved.

Parker acknowledged that the UPP has historically struggled with the fallout from leadership contests but argued that the party’s commitment to internal democracy, while sometimes messy, ultimately reflects a willingness to grow rather than suppress dissent.

She said her return should not be viewed as a claim that all problems have been solved, but as part of a broader effort to strengthen and expand the party ahead of the next general election.

Parker added that her own growth over the past two years away from active politics also played a role in her decision, describing her return as being grounded in principle rather than convenience.

She said the UPP now represents the most credible vehicle for rebuilding the opposition and advancing policy-focused governance, while acknowledging that continued work is needed to unify supporters and re-energize the party at the grassroots level.
