The police force plays an essential role in maintaining law, order, fairness and justice within our society. With that responsibility comes an expectation that every complaint will be handled professionally, impartially and with due regard for all persons involved.
There are instances where individuals may go to a police station and make reports against another person containing allegations that are exaggerated, misleading or simply untrue. While every individual has the right to make a report, a complaint should not automatically be treated as fact simply because it was made first.
This is where proper investigation becomes extremely important. Both sides should be heard, available evidence should be examined, and officers should seek to establish the facts before reaching conclusions. A person who is accused of wrongdoing deserves to be treated fairly and respectfully throughout the process.
There must also be no room for nepotism, favoritism, personal relationships or connections to influence how a complaint is handled. Even the perception that someone may receive preferential treatment because of who they know can weaken public confidence in law enforcement.
The police force must therefore continue to examine its internal practices and ensure that officers are held to high standards of professionalism, accountability and integrity. Where weaknesses exist, they should be addressed. Where complaints are made about the conduct of officers, there should be transparent and appropriate procedures for reviewing them.
This is not about condemning every police officer. There are officers who carry out their responsibilities professionally and honorably. Rather, it is about protecting the integrity of the institution and ensuring that those entrusted with enforcing the law do so without fear, favour, prejudice or personal influence.
Justice cannot be based on friendship, family connections or who tells their story first. It must be based on facts, evidence, fairness and proper investigation.
The public deserves a police force in which they can have confidence. Likewise, the hardworking officers who serve with integrity deserve to be part of an institution where professionalism and accountability are consistently upheld.
Fairness and justice must prevail.
