Antigua and Barbuda is strengthening its partnership with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), following high-level discussions held on the margins of PAHO’s 63rd Directing Council.
Minister of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs Michael Joseph and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kamaria DeCastro engaged with PAHO Director Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, Deputy Director Dr. Rhonda Sealey-Thomas and other senior officials to identify opportunities for deeper collaboration and support for Antigua and Barbuda’s health sector.
Key areas discussed included the use of artificial intelligence and new and emerging technologies to strengthen the country’s healthcare response and improve the delivery of health services.
The discussions also explored increased access to PAHO’s Revolving Fund and Strategic Fund mechanisms to support the procurement of high-cost pharmaceuticals and medical equipment. This would assist Antigua and Barbuda in addressing identified gaps in the health sector and improving access to essential resources.
Another priority area was the strengthening of primary healthcare services, with discussions focusing on partnerships and practical approaches to addressing human-resource gaps and ensuring that primary healthcare facilities have the personnel and support needed to effectively serve communities.
The engagement reflects Antigua and Barbuda’s continued efforts to leverage regional partnerships, technical cooperation and innovation to strengthen its health system and improve health outcomes for the population.
