Students enrolled in the carpentry programme at the Harrison Centre of the Antigua and Barbuda Institute of Continuing Education (ABICE) constructed a new sign for the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus, which was installed in time for the university’s 2026 graduation ceremony held on October 10.

The project was commissioned by UWI Five Islands and completed under the guidance of carpentry instructor Glenn Richards.

The large blue UWI sign was installed on the campus grounds as part of preparations for the graduation ceremony, providing a visible example of local craftsmanship and collaboration between the two educational institutions.

In a social media post, UWI Five Islands praised the students and their instructor for successfully completing the project.

“From commission to craft, this project brought together institutional partnership and skilled local talent,” the university said.

The campus congratulated Richards and the participating students for producing a sign it described as both functional and well made.

Officials also expressed appreciation to the Harrison Centre for demonstrating what Antiguan and Barbudan craftspeople can accomplish.

The project highlighted the practical skills being developed through ABICE’s carpentry programme and the contribution of technical and vocational education to national development.

The completed sign now stands on the Five Islands Campus as a lasting reminder of the collaboration and the students’ contribution to the university’s 2026 graduation celebrations.
