    — The Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers is calling for improved working conditions, stronger retention packages and better employment prospects for educators, warning that public appreciation alone cannot address the challenges facing the profession.

In a World Teachers’ Day 2026 message, union President Casroy Charles said celebrations of teachers’ contributions must be accompanied by stronger support systems that allow educators to perform their duties effectively.

“Acclamation alone cannot sustain us,” Charles said in the message issued on behalf of the union’s executive.

The union outlined three priorities: raising teachers’ social and economic status, establishing measures to retain competent and experienced educators, and ensuring working conditions support effective learning while allowing teachers to concentrate on their professional responsibilities.

Its call for improvements extends to teachers’ living conditions, terms of employment and career prospects. The executive also advocated attractive retention packages to help maintain an experienced teaching workforce.

Charles cautioned that the recognition associated with World Teachers’ Day should not obscure the need to address deeper problems within the education system.

“This revelry must not obscure the urgent need to strengthen the support structures that enable teachers to fully deploy their talents and vocation,” he said.

The message pointed to guidance from the International Labour Organization and UNESCO, questioning how long educators must wait for principles supporting the advancement of education to be fully integrated into the country’s system.

Charles also invoked the historical shortcomings of education in Antigua and Barbuda, describing an earlier system marked by poor facilities, weak attendance and limited opportunities for children.

While acknowledging progress, he questioned how far the country had moved beyond those inequities.

The union warned educators and education managers that inefficiency, ineffective practices and poor industrial relations cannot provide a sound foundation for the education system.

At the same time, Charles urged teachers to remain committed to their profession despite shortcomings among those responsible for managing and supporting education.

“Teachers, do not sever your bond with this noble calling,” he said.

The executive praised educators for their dedication, hard work and role in shaping future generations, describing them as central to the country’s development. It also acknowledged efforts by education partners to celebrate teachers.

However, the union said accepting less than meaningful improvements would diminish educators’ standing and threaten broader social progress.

Charles called on the public to support efforts to elevate the status of teachers, linking their well-being and professional success to the country’s future.

The message did not specify proposed financial benefits, a timetable for implementing the priorities or particular employment negotiations.
