The Ministry of Health is calling on residents across Antigua and Barbuda to make breast health a priority throughout October, with early detection and prompt medical attention at the centre of its Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaign.
As part of the observance, the public is also being encouraged to wear pink every Friday in October to show solidarity with people affected by breast cancer.
Health Minister Michael Joseph said the annual campaign should serve as more than a symbolic observance, urging people to become familiar with their bodies and act quickly if they notice anything unusual.
“Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an important reminder that we must take our health seriously,” Joseph said.
He encouraged residents to discuss breast cancer screening with their healthcare providers to determine what is appropriate for them.
The ministry is also drawing attention to possible warning signs, including a lump or thickening in the breast, changes in its size or shape, changes involving the skin or nipple, and unusual nipple discharge.
Anyone who notices a concerning change is being advised to seek medical attention rather than delay having it assessed.
Joseph also encouraged residents to use Breast Cancer Awareness Month to speak with relatives and friends about screening and to support people who have been diagnosed with the disease.
The ministry said wearing pink should be accompanied by meaningful action, including greater awareness, conversations about breast health and support for individuals and families affected by breast cancer.
