Work is underway to overhaul a key section of the St. John’s waterfront, with the boardwalk linking Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay being rebuilt ahead of the upcoming cruise season.

The Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority has started removing deteriorated sections of the walkway as part of a four-phase project extending through the downtown waterfront.

The rehabilitation will see the old wooden support piles replaced with concrete ones, while deteriorated decking will make way for pressure-treated pine that has been sealed against water damage.

Port Manager Dr. Darwin Telemaque is overseeing the project, which is designed to extend the life of the boardwalk and reduce the amount of maintenance required in the future.

Rather than closing the entire waterfront walkway at once, work will move through the area in stages.

Crews are starting with the main connection between Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay before moving to the section near the Heritage Quay police outpost.

Later phases will tackle the stretch between Exotic Antigua and the Boardwalk Casino and, finally, the area running from the casino towards Lower Nevis Street.

The Port Authority is aiming to have the rehabilitation completed before the 2026-27 cruise tourism season, provided there are no unexpected delays.

The upgraded boardwalk is expected to provide safer pedestrian
