Jennings Secondary School has assured parents and guardians that students are safe after a lockdown drill conducted on the campus caused confusion among some people.

In a notice issued to parents and guardians, Principal Rody Christopher said the exercise was intended to teach students how to respond and remain safe in the event that intruders enter the school compound.

“The school conducted a Lockdown Drill to make students aware of how to stay safe in case intruders came on the school’s campus,” Christopher said.

He acknowledged, however, that the exercise was misunderstood by some people, resulting in concern.

“Unfortunately, some persons misunderstood and some confusion was caused,” the principal said.

Christopher sought to reassure families that there was no emergency at the school.

“Please be assured that all is well and we have the best interest of your child / ward in mind,” he said.

The drill comes amid increased attention to safety and emergency preparedness in Antigua and Barbuda’s schools. The Ministry of Education has been expanding its Model Safe School Programme, which focuses on identifying risks, improving preparedness and ensuring students and staff know how to respond to emergencies.
