Twenty-five secondary school educators in Antigua and Barbuda are scheduled to take part in workshops on using artificial intelligence responsibly in the classroom, according to the U.S. Embassy.

Embassy public affairs officer Bobby Allison Jr. announced the training during a public lecture at the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus. He said AI education expert Dr. Joseph South would lead the workshops the following day.

The sessions will examine how teachers can use AI tools to support their work and how they can help students use the technology responsibly, Allison said. He did not identify the participating schools or say how the 25 educators were selected.

The workshops follow South’s public lecture on the skills students and educators need as AI becomes more common in education. South urged teachers to distinguish between tasks AI can help with and the difficult work students must do themselves to learn. He also called for clear conversations between teachers and students about acceptable AI use.

The lecture was held in partnership with UWI Five Islands Campus as part of the U.S. Embassy’s Freedom 250 initiative, which marks 250 years of American independence.
