— Students should have a role in shaping how the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus regulates artificial intelligence in coursework, an education technology expert told a campus audience.

Dr. Joseph South, chief innovation officer at ISTE, made the call after a representative speaking on behalf of the Guild of Students asked what part students should play in developing university AI policies, including rules on academic integrity, privacy, assessment and acceptable use.

“I think it’s imperative that student voices are part of that decision-making,” South said during a question-and-answer session following his public lecture.

Students could tell university officials how they are using AI, what they are hearing about expectations in the professions they hope to enter and what concerns they have about the technology, he said.

South cautioned against assuming all students welcome AI without reservation. Some have deep concerns about its risks, he said, and students’ views are likely to vary.

He also urged lecturers and students to be open with each other about their use of AI. Earlier in the discussion, South said uncertainty over who is using the technology, and for what purpose, can erode trust between them.

South did not say that UWI Five Islands had adopted new AI rules or announced a formal process for students to help draft them.
