Some United States embassies have relaxed security restrictions that previously prevented visa applicants from entering with cellphones and smartwatches.

Under the revised arrangements, applicants may carry cellphones, earbuds and smartwatches into designated consular waiting areas but must follow strict rules governing their use. Calls are prohibited, and audio may generally be played only through earbuds or headphones where permitted.

The U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic has published guidelines allowing visa applicants to bring cellphones and smartwatches into its consular waiting room. The U.S. Embassy in Jamaica introduced similar rules effective September 1, 2026.

Permitted items may also include non-liquid medication, necessary medical devices, small quantities of baby formula, baby food, milk and diapers, as well as money, belts, watches and keys.

Computers, cameras, USB drives, memory cards, speakers, weapons, sharp objects and other restricted items generally remain prohibited.

Applicants should check the website of the embassy where their appointment will take place because security rules differ by location. For example, official guidance in Trinidad and Tobago, Canada and Germany continues to list cellphones among prohibited items.
