The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda could soon be renamed the Royal Police Service of Antigua and Barbuda under legislation expected to be debated in Parliament on September 18.

The proposed change forms part of the Police Bill, 2026, which is intended to modernise the laws governing policing and promote a more service-oriented relationship between officers and the public.

Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin told Cabinet that the legislation would also introduce updated rules for the organisation’s various departments and establish provisions for handling complaints.

The Police Bill is among six major pieces of legislation scheduled for consideration by the House of Representatives.

According to Cabinet, the wider reforms are designed to ensure law-enforcement agencies operate under a modern legal framework and have the necessary powers and resources to protect the public.
