A family is raising concerns about the response to an alleged sexual assault after a man was reportedly raped by two men after accepting a ride late last Thursday.

According to the victim’s sister, her brother has been severely distressed since the alleged attack and was taken to a doctor for medical attention.

His father subsequently arranged for him to leave the island, and he has since departed.

The family said the man did not personally report the alleged assault to police because of the shame and stigma he felt as a male survivor of sexual violence. His sister, however, said she contacted police and informed them of the allegation.

She claims the family has seen no action since making contact with authorities. There has been no independent confirmation of the allegations or the police response.

The case has renewed concerns about the barriers male survivors of sexual assault may face when seeking help, including fear of ridicule, disbelief and questions about their masculinity or sexuality.

Sexual assault against men can have serious psychological and physical consequences, and advocates have repeatedly stressed that male survivors should receive the same dignity, support and access to justice as other victims.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged attack, including where it occurred and the identities of the alleged perpetrators, have not been disclosed.

Members of the public, particularly those travelling late at night, are also being urged to exercise caution when accepting rides from people they do not know or trust.
