ST. JOHN’S, Antigua — The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service has issued a heat warning for the country from Tuesday through Friday, warning that dangerous heat and humidity could push feels-like temperatures as high as 45 degrees Celsius (115 degrees Fahrenheit).
The warning will be in effect daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. between Aug. 4 and Aug. 7.
Meteorologists said a combination of high humidity and light winds will create oppressive conditions, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly among vulnerable groups.
Those most at risk include older adults, young children, people with heart, respiratory or other chronic medical conditions, outdoor workers, individuals exercising in the heat, and people experiencing homelessness.
Residents are being urged to drink plenty of water, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, seek shade or air-conditioned spaces whenever possible, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day.
The Meteorological Service is also encouraging the public to check on elderly relatives, neighbors and other vulnerable individuals during the warning period.
Officials advised residents to watch for signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, headaches, nausea, rapid heartbeat, confusion and loss of consciousness. Anyone suspected of suffering from heat stroke should receive immediate medical attention by calling 911.
The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service said it will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as necessary.
