A routine ferry trip between St. Kitts and Nevis turned into a rescue operation Monday after an inter-island ferry began taking on water and partially submerged shortly after leaving Basseterre.

All 47 passengers and crew members aboard the Apple Syder were rescued safely following a rapid response by the St. Kitts and Nevis Coast Guard and other emergency personnel, according to the St. Kitts & Nevis Observer.

Initial reports indicate the ferry encountered difficulties minutes after departing on its scheduled voyage to Nevis, prompting authorities to launch an emergency rescue operation.

Videos shared on social media showed passengers wearing life jackets floating in the water as rescue crews pulled them to safety while the vessel slowly sank.

Authorities said there were no reports of fatalities or serious injuries.

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew said he had been briefed on the incident, while Nevis Premier Mark Brantley confirmed he was monitoring the situation and receiving updates.

The cause of the incident has not yet been disclosed, and an investigation is expected.
