The West Indies Sail Heritage Foundation is celebrating a major milestone in its Ocean Love No Plastic No Waste programme, with more than 100,000 plastic bottle caps diverted from the waste stream and transformed into durable community benches for schools and youth organizations across Antigua and Barbuda.
Since the programme began, the Foundation has donated benches to eight schools and organizations, including:
- Sea View Farm Primary School
- Newfield Primary School
- Cobbs Cross Primary School
- Antigua & Barbuda Girl Guides Association
- Cedar Grove Primary School
- Potters Primary School
- Jennings Secondary School
- Buckleys Primary School
Each bench contains a minimum of 12,000 recycled plastic bottle caps, demonstrating how everyday waste can be repurposed into something practical, educational, and long-lasting.
The bench donations form part of the Foundation’s wider Ocean Love No Plastic No Waste initiative, which combines environmental education with hands-on action. Through the programme, students learn about plastic pollution, ocean conservation, and the 4Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Refuse. Participants are encouraged to rethink waste and understand how materials that are often discarded can become valuable resources.
The benches represent much more than seating. They are visible reminders of what can be achieved when communities work together to reduce waste and protect the environment.
Every bottle cap collected and recycled is one less piece of plastic that could end up polluting our oceans and our environment.
The Foundation extends its sincere gratitude to its programme partners and sponsors, Sandals Foundation, CCRIF SPC, and the French Embassy in Saint Lucia, whose support has made the initiative and the bench donations possible.
The Ocean Love No Plastic No Waste will continue in late 2026 and 2027, bringing environmental education, plastic recovery efforts, and upcycling activities to more young people across Antigua and Barbuda.
The Foundation hopes the programme will continue to inspire the next generation to view plastic waste differently, develop innovative solutions for environmental challenges, and create similar initiatives that help divert plastic waste from the ocean and the environment.
