Sports Minister Dwayne George has praised Antiguan cricketer Shawnisha “Britney” Hector following her selection to the West Indies Women’s T20 World Cup squad, describing the achievement as a landmark moment for Antigua and Barbuda.
In a statement, George said Hector has “etched her name into the history books” as the first and only woman from Antigua and Barbuda to represent the West Indies Women’s Team in both T20 Internationals and One Day Internationals (ODIs).
He said her selection to the regional squad represents a major accomplishment not only for Hector personally, but also for the country as a whole.
George pointed to Hector’s performances earlier this year in the Women’s T20 Blaze Tournament, where she earned the Most Valuable Player award while representing the Leeward Islands Stormers.
The minister also highlighted Hector’s leadership credentials, noting that she previously captained both the Antigua and Barbuda Women’s Team and the Leeward Islands Women’s Team.
“She has demonstrated dedication, discipline and exceptional leadership throughout her cricketing journey,” George said.
Beyond regional cricket, George noted Hector’s contributions to local cricket, where she has represented Piggotts Cricket Club, Police Cricket Club and Bolans Cricket Club.
He said her success should serve as an inspiration to young women and aspiring cricketers across Antigua and Barbuda.
George added that Hector’s achievements show that hard work, perseverance and passion can create opportunities for athletes to succeed at both regional and international levels.
Hector’s inclusion in the West Indies Women’s T20 World Cup squad marks another milestone in a career that has seen her emerge as one of Antigua and Barbuda’s most accomplished female cricketers.
