The government says Antigua and Barbuda is preparing to host what could become the largest and most demanding international conference ever staged in the country when the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting convenes later this year.

The projection was made Tuesday during the 2026 Throne Speech delivered by Governor-General Sir Rodney Williams at the ceremonial opening of Parliament.

According to the speech, more than 7,000 delegates, along with numerous heads of government and heads of state, are expected to travel to Antigua and Barbuda for CHOGM 2026.

“In November 2026, the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (the CHOGM) will convene in Antigua and Barbuda, with more than 7,000 delegates and scores of Heads of Government and of State,” Sir Rodney said.

“The CHOGM promises to be the largest and most challenging of international conferences,” he added.

The Throne Speech said the government has already received assistance from the British government and the British High Commission as preparations intensify ahead of the summit.

“My Government expresses its thanks to the British High Commission and its Government for the invaluable assistance which has been provided to ensure the safety and security of the many Heads who will participate,” the Governor-General said.

Sir Rodney also praised members of the country’s security forces and emergency services, saying they will play a critical role in hosting the event successfully.

The speech specifically recognized the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force, the Fire and Rescue Services, immigration and customs officers, and the Office of National Drug and Money Laundering Control Policy.

“Their professionalism, discipline, courage and sacrifice continue to provide an essential foundation for national stability and development,” Sir Rodney said.

The Governor-General said the government is confident local security agencies will demonstrate “the highest standards of service and professionalism” during the international gathering.

The Throne Speech also highlighted Antigua and Barbuda’s growing role as a regional conference and events hub, pointing to the successful hosting of the United Nations Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States in 2025 and the Organization of American States General Assembly earlier this year.

The government additionally noted that the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association has held its meetings in Antigua and Barbuda for two consecutive years, which it said reflects the country’s expanding profile as a destination for major international events.
