    No Tsunami Threat After 6.5 Magnitude Earthquake Near Antigua – Antigua News Room

    No tsunami threat was generated following a strong earthquake near Antigua on Saturday morning, according to preliminary information from the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (SRC).

    The SRC reported that the earthquake, measuring magnitude 6.5, occurred at 10:50 a.m. local time on May 16, 2026. The quake was located at latitude 17.39 north and longitude 61.18 west, at a depth of 31 kilometres.

    The epicentre was approximately 80 kilometres northeast of St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda. It was also located about 132 kilometres northeast of Brades, Montserrat, and 132 kilometres north-northeast of Point-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe.

    The SRC noted that the location was automatically generated by computer algorithms and remains subject to revision pending further review by analysts.
