The Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union will commemorate its 59th Anniversary between May 16 – 31, under the theme: “59 Years of Stewardship: Embracing the Changes and Preparing for the Future World of Work.”

Since its establishment in 1967, the Union has remained a steadfast advocate for workers’ rights and social justice, while shaping policies and initiatives that respond to the realities of a changing labour landscape.

Reflecting on the significance of this year’s theme, ABWU General Secretary, David Massiah, noted that the modern workplace is undergoing rapid transformation due to developments such as artificial intelligence, automation, the expansion of remote work and the gig economy, as well as the transition to a green economy.

He explained that while these changes cannot be halted or reversed, workers and institutions can adapt. “There must be a greater emphasis on training and retooling workers with the skills required for the evolving world of work,” Massiah stated. “Additionally, we must find ways to organise remote and gig economy workers so that they may enjoy the protections and benefits afforded to the traditional workforce.”

As part of the anniversary celebrations, the Union will host several activities, including the following:

    Sunday, 17 May | 10:00 a.m.
