Former Senator Samantha Marshall says the appointment of Tiffany Strann-Peters to the Senate is “just the beginning” for the young political activist whom she described as fearless, energetic and deeply rooted in community service.

Speaking after Thursday’s swearing-in ceremony at Government House, Marshall said she expects Strann-Peters to make a strong impact in national politics and public service.

“We expect great things for Tiffany. This is just the beginning,” Marshall said as she praised the newest government senator and the support she has received from the Bolans community.

Marshall, who said she has known Strann-Peters “practically all her life,” described the appointment as a proud and emotional moment for St. Mary’s South.

“I’m very proud of Tiffany, and I know that she has the ability to do what is necessary [and] represent well in the Senate,” she said.

The former senator also said the latest group of government senators reflects a new political direction focused on youth involvement and women’s empowerment.

“I think the selection of senators this time is really about energy, persons who already are on the ground advocating in terms of youth, women empowerment, and really looking at the overall national development of Antigua and Barbuda,” Marshall said. “I think this is a perfect fit right now.”

Marshall highlighted Strann-Peters’ years of activism within the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party, noting her work with youth groups and her role as deputy chair of the St. Mary’s South branch.

“She’s always been outspoken, never been shy, always willing to take the platform, take the media,” Marshall said. “I would say she’s fearless and that is the type of individual people are looking for.”

She added that the large turnout from Bolans at the ceremony reflected the level of support and admiration Strand-Peters has earned over the years.

“You can see that the whole village of Bolans is practically here,” Marshall said. “They have seen Tiffany develop over the years and so it’s a very proud moment.”

Marshall also welcomed the increased representation of women in Parliament, saying it could encourage more women to pursue leadership roles and elected politics in the future.

“She’s going to always champion youth matters and women empowerment,” Marshall said of the new senator.
