The Department of Environment hosted a handover ceremony for solar energy kits to support low-income and vulnerable households across Antigua and Barbuda.
This initiative forms part of the Government’s ongoing commitment to sustainable development, climate resilience, and improved quality of life for its citizens.
Delivering the feature address, Minister of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs, Sir Molwyn Joseph highlighted the importance of renewable energy solutions in strengthening community resilience and reducing energy insecurity.
He noted that the distribution of solar kits represents a tangible step toward integrating climate-smart technologies into national social support systems.
Minister Joseph also emphasized that the project also incorporates a technical training component aimed at building local capacity in the installation, maintenance, and management of solar energy systems, thereby ensuring the long-term sustainability and effectiveness of the initiative.
Mr. Wang Baolong, Representative of Hengtianyuan Lighting Group of China—the implementing agency for the Climate Change Assistance Project—also addressed the ceremony. He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting Antigua and Barbuda through the provision of reliable and sustainable energy solutions.
Her Excellency Jiang Wei, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Antigua and Barbuda, emphasized the strong and enduring partnership between both countries.
She noted that the donation reflects China’s continued support for Antigua and Barbuda’s climate adaptation efforts and broader sustainable development agenda.
The ceremony culminated in the signing of the Handover Certificate by Her Excellency Ambassador Jiang Wei and Honourable Sir Molwyn Joseph. The certificates formalize the transfer of the solar kits to the Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda.
The solar kits will provide clean, reliable energy to households that may otherwise face challenges accessing consistent electricity, significantly improving living conditions while contributing to national efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
