Browne Says Opposition ‘Broke,’ Warns of Tax Hikes and Job Cuts

Prime Minister and Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) leader Gaston Browne claimed that opposition figures are financially desperate and warned that a United Progressive Party (UPP) government could raise taxes and cut public sector jobs if elected.

Speaking on Pointe FM’s Browne and Browne Show, Browne suggested that some opposition candidates are seeking office primarily as a means of income after years out of power.

“When entities have been out of government for a long time… many of them, they have no income,” Browne said.

He singled out individuals during the broadcast, alleging that they lacked financial stability and, in some cases, had not made contributions toward pensions, raising questions about their preparedness for leadership.

Browne argued that such circumstances could influence how they govern if elected, suggesting they may act out of self-interest or vindictiveness.

He linked those claims to a broader warning about the opposition’s economic proposals, saying voters have not been told how campaign promises would be financed.

“Notice they never said that they’re not going to increase taxes up to this point,” Browne said.

He said fulfilling those commitments could force a future administration to introduce new taxes or cut spending.

“They can reintroduce personal income tax, they can increase taxes generally, and they can even retrench,” he said.

The prime minister directed his remarks at public sector workers, warning that they could be at risk under a change in government.

“Public servants better understand… if you think that… you can make the mistake and elect them and see what happens,” Browne said, adding that the opposition could act “vindictively” after years in opposition.

Browne contrasted that with his administration’s record, saying his government had committed to protecting jobs regardless of political affiliation.

“Not one person will be sent home… notwithstanding your political persuasion,” he said, while acknowledging a limited exception involving a ministerial decision outside stated policy.

The opposition has not responded to the claims made during the programme.
