The government says it is closely monitoring the welfare of Antiguan and Barbudan students in Cuba, as concerns persist over conditions on the island.

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said officials remain in regular contact with students, assessing their situation and providing support where needed.

“We continue to be in touch with our students in Cuba to assess on a weekly basis… their current situation,” Merchant said.

He said the government has already provided financial assistance and issued recommendations to help students manage ongoing challenges.

“The government has already come in and provided financial assistance to them,” Merchant said.

Merchant added that contingency plans are being considered in collaboration with regional partners in the event conditions worsen.

“There are contingency plans in place… along with our OECS partners in the event of different scenarios,” he said.

Despite the difficulties, he said students remain committed to completing their studies.

“They intend to complete their studies once the conditions allow them to do so,” Merchant said.

Officials said monitoring and support efforts will continue as part of the government’s broader response.
