Restrictions on fishing, seafood harvesting and sea bathing at Hanson’s Bay remain in force as government officials await the outcome of water quality testing.

Deputy Director of the National Office of Disaster Services Craig Cole said authorities will rely on laboratory results from the Government Analytical Unit before making any decision on reopening the area.

The precautionary measures were introduced after an oily sheen was observed in waters near Pearns Point. Subsequent investigations linked the contamination to runoff from the Cooks Landfill, triggering a coordinated response from the National Marine Pollution Committee.

Cole said mitigation steps have already been taken, including containment work on land and modifications to wastewater discharge systems aimed at preventing a repeat incident.

While the emergency committee has been stood down, agencies such as the Ministry of Health, the Fisheries Division, the National Solid Waste Management Authority and the Department of Environment continue to oversee monitoring efforts.

Authorities say once testing is complete, attention will shift to determining whether the incident caused lasting harm to marine ecosystems in the area. The public is advised to observe the restrictions until further notice.
