Prime Minister Gaston Browne has proposed expanding the role of students in maintaining public facilities, arguing that schools should place greater emphasis on practical skills and community service.

Speaking on his weekend radio programme, Mr Browne suggested that students attending schools near the Potters Sports Complex could help maintain parts of the facility, including its swimming pool and landscaped areas.

He said the initiative would equip young people with practical skills that could lead to careers in areas such as pool maintenance, landscaping and grounds management.

The Prime Minister also proposed that every school establish a plant nursery to grow ornamental plants for use on campuses and in surrounding communities, saying the initiative would help improve public spaces while teaching students valuable horticultural skills.

Mr Browne said structured programmes would encourage students to take greater responsibility for community assets, reducing dependence on contractors and promoting civic pride.

The proposal is part of a wider effort to combine classroom learning with hands-on experience and community involvement.
