Browne Says Road Repairs Advancing, Major Progress Expected Within Months

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the government is making steady progress on road rehabilitation across Antigua and Barbuda, with key projects such as All Saints Road moving forward under the supervision of the Public Works Department.

Responding to a question in Parliament on the status of road repairs, Browne acknowledged that fully addressing the country’s road infrastructure will be a long-term undertaking.

“We have thousands of miles, and evidently, it’s going to take us a number of years to substantially resolve the road issue,” Browne said.

Despite the scale of the challenge, the prime minister said significant gains have already been made and pointed to work underway on All Saints Road and the Sir Sydney Walling Highway.

Browne said the government opted to use the Public Works Department rather than an external contractor for the project, describing the results as positive and cost-effective.

“We have decided to utilize the services of Public Works. They’re doing an excellent job,” he said.

The prime minister noted that the department is carrying out the work for less than half the amount a Canadian firm had proposed to rehabilitate the 13-mile stretch of road leading to English Harbour.

While he did not provide a specific completion date, Browne said the project is progressing steadily.

“Even though I don’t have a precise timeline, I presume that perhaps in the next couple of months we should make significant progress and would be nearing completion,” he said.

The government has identified road rehabilitation as a major infrastructure priority and continues to invest in repairs across the national road network.
