Karen-Mae Hill Pays Tribute to Music Educator and Choir Director Dr. Renee Smith

High Commissioner Karen-Mae Hill has paid tribute to Dr. Renee Smith, describing her as an extraordinary servant of youth, music and education whose influence touched generations of young people across Antigua and Barbuda.

In a heartfelt statement, Hill reflected on a friendship that began in 1989 when the two met as first-form students at the Antigua Girls’ High School.

Hill recalled Smith’s talent as a member of the school’s choir, which she described as “a world-class choir with world-class singers,” and said they shared a deep love of music and a strong foundation in the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

According to Hill, Smith possessed a rare ability to transform music and the performances of young people into something exceptional through her attention to enunciation, tone and interpretation.

“She was a first-class choir leader, and this excellence translated into every aspect of her work,” Hill said.

Beyond her musical accomplishments, Hill said Smith genuinely cared for her students and developed close bonds with those she mentored.

“She held a special love for each of her students. They, in turn, loved her and were extremely protective and supportive of her,” Hill said.

She described Smith as a dedicated servant who worked quietly behind the scenes, giving of herself without seeking recognition or public praise.

Hill also highlighted Smith’s leadership of the National Youth Choir during a 2018 visit to London, calling it a moment of immense national pride.

“She conducted a choir that wowed audiences in a city renowned for its rich musical tradition and excellence,” Hill said.

Extending condolences to Smith’s family, colleagues, church community and former classmates, Hill remembered her friend as a gifted musician, educator and mentor whose legacy will endure through the many lives she touched.

“Rest in peace, my dear sister and cherished friend,” Hill wrote.
