Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) is grappling with a “leadership dilemma” and internal instability, arguing that the party lacks viable succession planning.

Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show on Pointe FM, Browne said the UPP is “an imploding institution” and suggested that its internal divisions could deepen in the coming months.

“There’s a leadership crisis within the UPP,” Browne said, adding that neither of the party’s senior figures are “viable” options to unify and lead the opposition forward.

Browne contrasted the situation with what he described as structured succession planning within the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), saying his administration has deliberately positioned younger members for future leadership roles.

“That is why we can’t afford to be selfish within the Labour Party,” he said. “We have to continue to blood young candidates and to ensure that smooth transition.”

The prime minister pointed to several younger ministers and party members whom he said have matured into leadership positions over the past decade, describing the approach as essential to long-term political stability.

Browne’s remarks come as Antigua and Barbuda prepares for the March 16 St. Philip’s North by-election, where both major parties are seeking to consolidate support.

He maintained that the ABLP remains unified, while suggesting the opposition is struggling to maintain cohesion.
