Motorists across Antigua faced lengthy waits for gasoline Wednesday evening after major service stations stopped selling fuel in a renewed push for higher dealer margins.
Hundreds of vehicles lined up for miles as drivers searched for operating pumps. The shutdown marks the second protest in recent weeks by station operators seeking a larger share of revenue from fuel sales.
Demand shifted to West Indies Oil Company stations, creating heavy congestion around outlets that continued serving customers.
By Wednesday evening, WIOC’s Friars Hill station was reportedly the company’s only outlet still dispensing gasoline. Other WIOC locations were said to have exhausted their supplies as motorists crowded the remaining stations.
Some residents approached stations on foot with fuel containers, avoiding roads clogged with waiting vehicles.
The renewed shutdown has left drivers facing another round of disruption, with no clear indication of when closed stations will reopen or normal service will return.
