A Hungarian national who was discovered in Antigua and Barbuda despite being sought by authorities in Budapest is expected to be returned to his home country on Thursday.
The 21-year-old is the subject of an Interpol alert linked to an alleged offence involving children in Hungary. Local immigration authorities reportedly discovered the international alert while conducting checks after he was detained for an immigration violation.
His detention in Antigua and Barbuda followed an encounter at sea, where the Coast Guard picked him up and turned him over to police. He spent several days in police custody before immigration authorities took over the matter.
Officials subsequently established that the Hungarian had been allowed to stay in Antigua and Barbuda only until June 20, having entered the country on March 22. He was charged with remaining beyond the period granted to him.
The man appeared before a local court approximately two weeks ago and was remanded pending further proceedings.
Hungarian authorities have since made arrangements for his return. Correspondence sent from Budapest on Sept. 23 indicated that two Hungarian officials were due to arrive in Antigua on Oct. 3 to handle the escort.
The man is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 8, when he is also expected to leave Antigua and Barbuda in the custody of the Hungarian officials.
Details of the alleged child-related offence for which he is wanted in Hungary have not been made public.
