Trinidad and Tobago will hold a state-assisted funeral and celebration of life for calypso singer Mighty Sparrow on 16 October, following two days of public viewing.
The Ministry of Culture and Community Development said mourners could pay their respects at the Southern Academy for the Performing Arts on 13 October and the National Academy for the Performing Arts on 14 October. Both viewings will run from 10am to 6pm.
At the family’s request, photography and video recording will not be allowed during the viewing sessions.
Sparrow, born Slinger Francisco, was widely known as the Calypso King of the World. His remains were returned from New York on 6 October.
The celebration of life will begin at 10am with a procession from Independence Square in Port of Spain, along Frederick Street to the National Academy for the Performing Arts.
Members of the public, school representatives and Carnival and cultural groups are expected to take part. Selected recordings of Sparrow’s music will accompany the procession.
A tribute programme will follow from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, featuring steel orchestras, Moko Jumbies and traditional masquerade performers.
Arrangements are also being made for the public to watch the celebration at the Grand Stand, Queen’s Park Savannah. Further details will be announced.
A condolence book is available until 15 October at designated locations across Trinidad and Tobago and overseas diplomatic missions. An online version is available through the ministry’s website.
The government is working with the Francisco family to finalise the farewell arrangements.
