Sir David Harrison has been formally welcomed as the new chairman of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus Council, following an earlier recommendation by the Antigua and Barbuda government.
The announcement was made Saturday during the university’s 2026 graduation ceremony by UWI Chancellor Dr. the Most Honourable Dodridge D. Miller.
Miller paid tribute to Harrison’s predecessor, Sir Aziz Hadeed, who died on May 23, 2026.
Hadeed, a prominent Antiguan businessman and philanthropist, served as the inaugural chairman of the Campus Council following the institution’s establishment in 2019.
Miller remembered Hadeed as a great patron of the university and a source of strength for the developing campus.
He also welcomed Harrison, acknowledging his extensive experience and the foundation established by his predecessor.
The appointment follows a June 17 Cabinet decision to recommend Harrison as chairman of both the Campus Council and the Campus Endowment Fund.
Harrison is a British entrepreneur and philanthropist with more than four decades of business experience. He chairs the Newcastle-based financial services company True Potential LLP and previously founded Positive Solutions, which became one of the United Kingdom’s largest financial advisory businesses.
He has also invested in education and youth development through the Harrison Foundation and Harrison Centres for Social Mobility, including initiatives in Antigua and Barbuda.
In 2022, Harrison received the Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of the Nation for his contributions to business, education and social mobility.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne had previously indicated that he would ask Harrison to consider assuming the chairmanship following Hadeed’s death.
The graduation ceremony is one of two being held at Five Islands on Saturday, marking the first time the campus has hosted two graduation ceremonies on the same day.
