Geological surveys and soil testing are underway at the Louis Hill Housing Project in Barbuda as preparations advance for the construction of new homes under a Chinese assistance initiative.

Senator Kendra Beazer, who provided an update on the project, said a technical team from China is conducting surveys and mapping across the site before construction moves to its next stage.

“Progress continues on the Louis Hill Housing Project under the China Aid initiative,” Beazer said.

He said the technical work is aimed at ensuring the homes are constructed on stable ground and meet appropriate safety standards.

“A technical team from China has been conducting geological surveys and mapping across the site to ensure the highest standards of safety and stability,” Beazer said.

Photographs shared by the senator show members of the technical team conducting work at the Louis Hill site, including the use of drilling equipment.

Beazer said soil samples are also being analysed to give engineers a clearer understanding of the ground conditions beneath the proposed development.

“Through on-site testing and soil sample analysis, we are gathering precise data on the soil strata that will form the foundation of the new homes,” he said.

“This work is essential to guarantee that each structure is built on solid ground, secure, resilient, and ready to serve Barbudan families for generations.”

The latest work follows several government announcements about plans to develop housing at Louis Hill.

Government planning documents have identified Louis Hill as an area for residential expansion in Barbuda. The site has also formed part of wider plans to provide additional housing and residential land on the sister island.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said in the government’s 2025 budget presentation that the first phase of the Louis Hill Housing Development was estimated to cost $8 million and would form part of a broader development plan for Barbuda.

Plans for the area have since expanded. In March 2026, Browne announced plans for 50 condominium-style homes at Louis Hill, with the properties expected to be made available under a rent-to-own arrangement.

The government has also been moving to open additional land at Louis Hill. Cabinet reported in May 2026 that preparations were being made for the clearing of 216 acres as part of the administration’s programme to make residential land available to Barbudans.

The geological investigations now underway are intended to provide engineers with information about soil composition and subsurface conditions before foundations for the housing development are constructed.

Beazer said the work represents continued progress toward bringing the development to fruition.

“Step by step, Barbuda’s future is taking shape,” he said.

China has financed or supported several infrastructure and housing projects in Antigua and Barbuda in recent years, and the Louis Hill project adds Barbuda to those housing initiatives.

The government has not yet announced in the latest update when construction of the homes will begin or when the development is expected to be completed.
