Education Minister Daryll Matthew has praised teachers across Antigua and Barbuda who go beyond their formal duties, including spending their own money to provide supplies for students and classrooms.
Matthew highlighted the sacrifices made by educators while addressing the Ministry of Education’s annual Thanksgiving Service, saying their contribution often extends well beyond normal working hours.
“We give God thanks for our teachers who arrive early, they leave late, they buy supplies from their own pockets,” Matthew said.
He said teachers also play an important role in identifying and developing the abilities of children, sometimes recognizing their potential before the students themselves do.
“They see the potential in a child long before that child even sees it in themselves,” the education minister said.
Matthew extended his appreciation to principals, custodians, school meals workers, bus drivers and administrative staff, saying each group contributes to keeping the country’s schools functioning.
He also recognized parents and guardians for entrusting their children to the education system each day.
The minister’s remarks came as he discussed the Ministry of Education’s theme for the 2026-2027 academic year,
“Colouring Outside the Lines: Empowering and Transforming Students, Building Safer, Stronger Communities Together.”
Matthew said strengthening the education system requires cooperation beyond the classroom, arguing that schools, families and the government cannot accomplish the task individually.
“The ministry cannot do this alone. Schools cannot do this alone. Families cannot do this alone,” he said.
Matthew said government, schools, homes, churches and the wider community must work in the same direction, describing both education and the safety of children as shared responsibilities.
