Prime Minister Gaston Browne is calling for cleaner, more attractive vending areas during Antigua Carnival, criticizing the continued use of wooden pallets to construct temporary bars and stalls.

Browne raised the issue during his weekly radio programme after a vendor complained that the widespread use of pallets diminished the appearance of vending areas in St. John’s.

“I hate to see those pallets,” Browne said, suggesting that vendors could use affordable pop-up tents instead.

“You can buy a little tent,” he said. “You can buy a pop-up tent, 10 by 10, for $150.”

The prime minister’s comments come as planning begins for the 70th anniversary of Antigua Carnival in 2027, which is expected to be promoted as a major national celebration.

While Browne described the recently concluded Carnival as productive and successful, he said improvements were needed in the presentation of vending spaces. He also expressed concern that pallets used during the festivities remained in parts of the capital several days after Carnival ended.

The comments signal that vending standards and the appearance of St. John’s could receive increased attention as organizers prepare for next year’s milestone celebration.

Browne did not announce any new regulations or financial assistance for vendors. However, his remarks suggested that he wants vendors to move toward cleaner and more uniform temporary structures that would improve the overall presentation of Carnival.
