Former United Progressive Party candidate Gladys Potter and her husband, Mark Potter, are mourning the death of their 21-year-old son, Kenyah S. Potter, who reportedly drowned while swimming at Buffalo Harbor State Park in Buffalo, New York.

Kenyah, an Antiguan who was living and studying in West Seneca, disappeared after entering the water in the park’s outer harbor shortly before midnight Saturday. He had celebrated his 21st birthday less than two weeks earlier.

Emergency responders launched a multi-agency search involving the Buffalo Fire Department, Erie County Sheriff’s Office, Buffalo Police Marine Unit and Underwater Recovery Team.

His body was recovered shortly after midnight by members of the marine unit and underwater recovery team.

The Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene, and an autopsy is expected to determine the cause and circumstances of his death.

In a statement, the UPP said its leadership, Central Executive and membership joined Gladys and Mark Potter and their family in mourning Kenyah, “whom we watched grow from boy to young man.”

“We extend sincere condolences and sympathy at this difficult time, as you all remain in our thoughts and prayers,” the party said.
