Parliament has approved a resolution ratifying a visa exemption agreement between Antigua and Barbuda and the United Arab Emirates, a move government officials say will strengthen diplomatic relations and facilitate travel between the two countries.

The resolution was presented to the House of Representatives by Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene and forms part of Antigua and Barbuda’s ongoing efforts to expand its international partnerships and deepen cooperation with countries in the Middle East.

The agreement provides for visa-free travel for eligible passport holders from Antigua and Barbuda and the United Arab Emirates, removing the requirement to obtain visas prior to travel and simplifying movement between the two nations.

Lawmakers approved the resolution during Tuesday’s parliamentary sitting as part of a package of international agreements brought before the House for ratification.

The visa waiver arrangement is expected to enhance opportunities for official travel, business engagement, tourism and cultural exchanges between Antigua and Barbuda and the UAE.

The United Arab Emirates has emerged as an increasingly important partner for Caribbean nations in recent years, particularly in the areas of investment, renewable energy, aviation, trade and development cooperation.

Government officials have previously highlighted the importance of expanding Antigua and Barbuda’s diplomatic and economic relationships beyond its traditional partners in North America and Europe, identifying the Gulf region as an area of growing strategic interest.

The ratification of the agreement comes as Antigua and Barbuda continues to pursue stronger international partnerships through bilateral agreements and increased engagement with countries across Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

The visa exemption resolution was among several international measures approved by Parliament during the sitting. Lawmakers also ratified amendments relating to the International Labour Organization, protocols associated with the International Civil Aviation Organization, and agreements concerning international financial information exchange.

The resolutions were approved without extended debate.

Government officials said the agreements collectively strengthen Antigua and Barbuda’s international standing while enhancing cooperation with key global partners.

The visa waiver agreement is expected to enter into force following the completion of the remaining administrative and diplomatic procedures required by both countries.
